Good evening friends. I am writing with the lightest heart as the weekend is approaching rapidly and spirits are (characteristically) high. There is a sweetness in the evening air that is nothing short of temptation – the thrill of possibility hanging in between the stars. I adore the summer as it is truly never-ending – seamless and consistently inspired. My inspiration is drawn heavily from the ability to grow with the amicable weather (we must take it while we can in South Dakota).
South Dakota you say? Now somewhere in the black mountain hills!
Upon our arrival a few years ago I slowly integrated myself amongst the locals. I am now well acquainted with many who have grown up here. It was (and still is) to my unfailing shock how much dismay I was greeted with by our locals when expressing my inherent NEED (it far surpasses desire) to grow a garden. Many shook their heads in disagreement and slanted eyes, while some eagerly listened to my game plan. Confused? So was I. It seemed to me that South Dakota was somewhat of an agricultural state (we grow a lot of cows), however the common vegetable garden was a foray into sin! This is not to say it cannot (and is not) done every day here with victory, however it is apparently a gamble with the volatile weather patterns we are prone to.
I was introduced kindly to hail and wind that first year of living here – as I’ve never been introduced before. And now I live beside the elements – even welcome their release. We adapt as humans, yes?
This is essentially what Rooting The Sun means to me. The possibility of the alleged impossible. Reality is achievement. Our desire fulfills our expression and we accelerate until what we have is the contentedness of our creation. Is it possible to Root the Sun? Perhaps in philosophy. Perhaps we do it every day to help us while we grow the garden. Is growing a vegetable garden impossible here in town? No, but you must be patient and be able to accept unpredictability. I think the most satisfying sustenance stems only from such conditions.
I wanted to create an additional outlet for all of my energy in making this blog. Some of this is highly experimental but all of it is a learning experience. In simple terms, if you enjoy constant gardening and cooking then I hope you will stay awhile. In complexities that kaleidoscope daily across my sky: if you enjoy existentialism, obsessive weather musings, healthy goals, poetry and everything else the sun encompasses – I hope you will stay awhile.
Welcome to impossibly crazy weather, gardening in light of, and eating better because.
